“Cuba, Libre?” Hits 49!

Today Cuba, Libre? became a film festival Official Selection for the 49th time and the fifth time in the last thirty days.

It is the second time in the last month that it has been picked by a film festival in the Netherlands.

This time it was MoziMotion 2019, which will take place October 5-13, 2019 at Hilversum, North Holland that made the film an Official Selection.

Two weeks ago The Hague Global Film Festival, scheduled for November 15-17, 2019, chose Cuba, Libre?

 

“Cuba, Libre?” In The Hunt For Another Documentary Film Award

Cuba, Libre? has just been named a “Finalist” for the “Best Short Documentary” award at next month’s Davis International Film Festival to be held October 23-25, 2019 in Davis, California, just west of the California State Capitol in Sacramento.

The screening date and time for the film has not as yet been set but Director/Producer, Dick Jordan, hopes to be able to attend and walk away with the film’s 18th award.

Bad news: Hurricane “Dorian” scuttled the end-of-August screening of Cuba, Libre? as well as other films at this year’s Urban Film Festival in Miami.

Good news: Miami wasn’t hammered by the storm and the festival has been rescheduled to October with Cuba, Libre? on the silver screen late in the evening of Saturday, October 12th.

Director/Producer, Dick Jordan, will not be able to attend the festival but has asked Zuzy Martin Lynch of Miami, the Director of the award-winning documentary, Craving Cuba, to go in his stead.

The two met at the 2015 Mill Valley Film Festival when both were living in Marin County, California, and simultaneously working on their respective Cuba documentary films that would be released in 2016.

For the third time in the last week, and fourth time in the past three weeks, Cuba, Libre? has been made a film festival Official Selection.
 
If it is chosen as a finalist for “Best Documentary,” the film will be screened at the Davis International Film Festival to be held from October 23-26, 2019 in Davis, California.

For the 47th time since its January, 2016 release, and the second time this week Cuba, Libre? has been a film festival “Official Selection.”

It will be shown along with over 300 other films via the”virtual theater system” of the 18th Annual Great Lakes International Film Festival which will run on-line from September 19th through 28th.

If it is nominated for an award Cuba, Libre? will be screened before a live audience at the festival.

Today Cuba, Libre? became a film festival selection for the 46th time since its release in January of 2016 when it was chosen by The Hague Global Cinema Festival.

In its notification of the selection, the festival said:

“We take this opportunity to congratulate you for the great cinema work. Your submission faced tough competition from around 900 submissions from over 80 countries. Great work! Keep it up!”

If it becomes an Award Finalist, Cuba, Libre? will be shown in November at the festival in The Hague in the Netherlands.

“Cuba, Libre?” Screening Set for Next Weekend at Miami’s Urban Film Festival

Cuba, Libre? will be shown next weekend at the Urban Film Festival in Miami, Florida.

The film will be screened at 10:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 31st, at the Overtown Performing Arts Center.

Updated Friday, August 30th: Due to the threat of extremely hazardous weather conditions in the Miami because of Tropical Storm/Hurricane Dorian, the Urban Film Festival has been rescheduled to Columbus Day weekend (October 11-13, 2019). Presumably Cuba, Libre? will be shown at 10:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 12th.

Friends of filmmaker, Dick Jordan, can probably obtain a free pass to the screening by registering through this link on Eventbrite.

A three-day pass that will allow you to attend the entire festival is also available through Eventbrite.

“Cuba, Libre?” Becomes 45th Film Festival Official Selection

The Urban Film Festival that will take place in Miami, Florida on Labor Day weekend this year has just announcemed that Cuba, Libre? is one of its Official Selections.

Ironically, it is the first time that the film, which focus on the history of travel to Cuba by Americans from the early decades of the 20th century to the present day, and especially to travelers headed to that island nation from Miami, will have been screened in South Florida.

Last week Cuba, Libre? had a screening before an audience of fans of the Beloit International Film Festival which is considering including the film in its 15th annual festival to be held next February in Beloit, Wisconsin.

A teacher at the local high school couldn’t make the screening so she e-mailed the film’s producer, director asking how she could obtain a copy of Cuba, Libre? to show to her students.

If Cuba, Libre? proves to be a useful classroom tool for her, it may be offered to high school teachers in other cities.

Tonight Cuba, Libre? Producer/Director, Dick Jordan, be doing an audience Q&A session via Skype after the Beloit International Film Festival previews the film.

The film had its community TV premiere in January of 2016 on MarinTV which is operated by the Community Media Center of Marin (CMCM.tv) in San Rafael, California.

It has now aired on 60 such stations in 22 states across the U.S. (plus the District of Columbia) serving communities as small as 600 households to ones with a million or more. Collectively, those stations serve over 3.3 million households.

And to-date the film has been an “Official Selection” of 44 film festivals across the globe, won 17 awards, and been nominated 9 times for “Best Documentary” winning 4 times in that category.

Fans of the Beloit International Film Festival (February 21-March 1, 2020) have a chance to to preview Cuba, Libre? at a special screening on May 1, 2020 at the Hendricks Center for the Arts on the Beloit College campus in Beloit, Wisconsin, as part of the festival’s “Year ‘Round” program.

The film’s Producer/Director, Dick Jordan, will participate in and audience Q&A session via Skype from his home in Eugene, Oregon.

The festival’s Website says:

“The Beloit International Film Festival (BIFF) will be celebrating its 15th year in 2020.

“One of the key principles the festival was founded on was a respect for, and celebration of, the filmmakers who share their art with us.

“With upwards of 150 filmmakers attending each year, we are pleased that they have found value in the Capra-esque surroundings of the 10 day festival and the intimate relationships with our engaged audiences.

“Featuring upwards of 100 independent and international films, as well as a dozen special events, the festival provides free admission to everything for all visiting filmmakers (4 all-access passes per film for actors and crew, too).”

Although the festival will not formally announce which films it has selected for the February 2020 festival until December 1, 2019, in an e-mail to Producer/Director, Dick Jordan, last week, the festival’s Greg Gerard said:

Cuba, Libre? is one of the highest rated submissions so far for the 2020 Beloit International Film Festival, and a film that we want to promote as likely to be part of our festival lineup next February!”
